A Puppy!

Laura and I had been wanting to get a dog for a few years, but we couldn’t agree on what kind to get or how big it should be. With me being gone a lot on long trips, we wanted Laura to have a friend at home while I was away. I always wanted a medium to large sized dog, and Laura always wanted a little buddy to run around our small house. My sister has a Chihuahua and after I got to know him, I decided that a small dog wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Chihuahua’s are affordable, but can have lots of genetic problems with their legs. Yorkies are cute with fewer genetic and breeding issues, but are a LOT more money. In the end, Laura found our perfect puppy — a Chorkie. Chorkies are a cross between Chihuahuas and Yorkies, costing less than a Yorkie, but without the knee and leg problems of a Chihuahua.

We found a cute puppy in an ad in North Columbus. When we drove up to see him, he was outgoing and playful. At twelve weeks, he was still tiny, but with his personality, we knew we wanted him. We paid for him, let him take one more pee, and then Laura held him as we drove off to the nearest Pet’s Mart to buy the essentials: food bowls, toys, a crate, food and treats.

In the car ride home, he took to us right away, didn’t seem scared, and was just glad to have our attention. The next morning, we took him to the vet, just walking distance from our house, to have him checked out for problems. The funny thing was, at this point, it wouldn’t have mattered what “problems” he might have had, Laura was keeping this cute little guy, no matter what.

He was healthy and we were happy. He was born the day after Thanksgiving, 2010, and we took him home in early February, 2011. The day before he was born, while he was just about ready to pop out of his mamma, Laura and I were taken to Cowboys Stadium with my sister Katie and her husband Scott to watch the Cowboys and Saints play on Thanksgiving day. That was fun, for sure, and provided a memorable bookmark to our doggie’s birthday.

Gus is his name, and friendly is his game. Happy to play, he certainly keeps us busy with his Yorkie side showing much more than his laid back Chihuahua side. He keeps Laura company while I’m away and keeps us both in better shape as we take him on walks or chase him around the house like he demands. Click on Laura’s picture to see more pictures of Gus. I’m really glad to have Gus and even happier Laura was able to convince me of the joys of a small dog. We love our Gus!
