Every 12 months, all Cathay Pacific pilots undergo an evaluation, known as the annual line check. This isn’t some run of the mill check that takes just a few minutes, but more like a three or four flight evaluation that is exhaustive and rigorous. Most of us study for weeks before hand because it is so stressful. The sad part of this story is that it doesn’t have to be this way. Most air carriers, especially in North America, and more specifically the U.S., it’s isn’t that big of deal. However, at Cathay, it is made into a big deal, mostly because of the culture that runs through its veins. It is what it is. I deal with it and move on.
This year’s check had a very auspicious start.

Laura and I had been wanting to get a dog for a few years, but we couldn’t agree on what kind to get or how big it should be. With me being gone a lot on long trips, we wanted Laura to have a friend at home while I was away. I always wanted a medium to large sized dog, and Laura always wanted a little buddy to run around our small house. My sister has a Chihuahua and after I got to know him, I decided that a small dog wouldn’t be so bad after all.
Chihuahua’s are affordable, but can have lots of genetic problems with their legs. Yorkies are cute with fewer genetic and breeding issues, but are a LOT more money. In the end, Laura found our perfect puppy — a Chorkie. Chorkies are a cross between Chihuahuas and Yorkies, costing less than a Yorkie, but without the knee and leg problems of a Chihuahua.

A reader’s comment reminded me of this true story of Thanksgiving, told by Rush Limbaugh, in a way only he can tell it. Good luck finding this story in your child’s classroom.
Time now, ladies and gentlemen, for The Real Story of Thanksgiving, as written by I — by me — in my second book, See, I Told You So. It’s page 70 in the hardcover version. “On August 1, 1620, the Mayflower set sail. It carried a total of 102 passengers, including forty Pilgrims led by William Bradford. On the journey, Bradford set up an agreement, a contract, that established just and equal laws for all members of the new community, irrespective of their religious beliefs. Where did the revolutionary ideas expressed in the Mayflower Compact come from? From the Bible. The Pilgrims were a people completely steeped in the lessons of the Old and New Testaments. They looked to the ancient Israelites for their example. And, because of the biblical precedents set forth in Scripture, they never doubted that their experiment would work.”

What does Apple have in store for us Mac users? “Back to the Mac” implies there will be emphasis on the computer/operating system side of things (instead of the focus on iOS, if you hadn’t noticed the release of new iPhones, iPads, and iPods). An update to iLife? A new MacBook Air? A new operating system called Lion? Wait and see what Apple has up its sleeve on October 20th.
